The 76th Primetime Emmys took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Dan Levy called it “broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.” Jodie Foster, a winner for “True Detective: Night Country,” must have felt seen.
Levy, hosting with his father Eugene, led a ceremony with both surprises and predictability. Liza Colón-Zayas and Lamorne Morris won supporting acting awards, surprising even themselves.
The broadcast slowed in the second hour, with a long introduction and an in memoriam sequence. But it picked up in the third, with big wins for “Baby Reindeer” and “Shogun.” These shows set a record for most Emmy Awards in a season (18).
The ceremony ended with a big shock: “Hacks” won best comedy, beating out “The Bear.” “The Bear” received 11 awards, the most for a comedy in a season. This must be some comfort.
The hosts debated “The Bear” early on. Eugene Levy joked, “We will not be making any jokes.” But there were great jokes, like those from Selena Gomez and Candice Bergen. These moments were the best and worst of the Emmys. ALEXIS SOLOSKI
We knew some shows would dominate the Emmys. But there were surprises in store for us.
“Baby Reindeer” won best limited or anthology series. But “Ripley” and “Fargo” also won. “Slow Horses” and “The Morning Show” challenged “Shogun’s” dominance. And “Hacks” beat out “The Bear” in the final award, proving it's a real comedy.
While many thought “The Bear” wasn’t a comedy, “Hacks” won. This kept the Emmys exciting. JAMES PONIEWOZIK
